Consumer narratives and storytelling can spur audiences to organized action and build capacity for advocacy in those sharing their lived experience. These stories can also serve as qualitative data to inform program implementation and support development efforts. While this can be a powerful communications tool, great care should be placed in working with the consumers and developing products that share their stories in a meaningful, empowering, and ethical way.

Kate Marple, Director of Communications for the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnership, will discuss considerations for empowering collaborations with consumers and answer questions on related communications strategies involving consumer partners.

Example participant questions:
What are some potential ethical considerations when sharing patient stories? For example: financial or other incentives, privacy concerns, or proprietary information
How can programs use narratives to inform program delivery and infrastructure?
What are some ways to engage consumers around developing narratives?

Presenter:

Kate Marple, is a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Health Policy and Management at The George Washington University, and is the Director of Communications for its National Center for Medical-Legal Partnership. She focuses on how partnerships across sectors can develop common language to foster collaboration, and trains civil legal aid and health care leaders to develop and message a shared mission. Ms. Marple authored the messaging guide, “Framing Legal Care as Health Care,” and has published articles both on building common language across sectors and on nonprofit storytelling.

 

What are Office Hours for Complex Care?

Beginning in January 2018, the National Center for Complex Health and Social Needs will host monthly Office Hours for Complex Care as an opportunity for engagement with subject matter experts across the country. Free of charge and hosted through the teleconferencing platform Zoom, Office Hours will feature hour-long Q&A sessions designed to connect National Center members with experts in relevant areas. Topics will vary from month-to-month and will cover a range of subjects that relate to the field of complex care. Feel free to join as a group and be sure to bring your questions for the session hosts and other participants!
