Building a Field to Understand Care was the third plenary session of December 2016’s Putting Care at the Center conference, the inaugural conference of the National Center for Complex Health and Social Needs.

Medicine has historically focused on improving the efficacy of cures. As our healthcare system increasingly pivots to the needs of individuals with chronic conditions and an aging population, how do we apply the science of human connection to enhance the impact of care and improve outcomes? Drawing from a variety of disciplines, what are the fundamental components necessary to build a field of care to inform relationships among providers, patients, caregivers, and families? This panel of experts explores how we identify, teach, and scale the underlying principles of high-quality care approaches to improve health.
